  • Abstract:
    Millennial quantity surveyors (QSs) make up 53% of the quantity surveying profession in South Africa (SA). The importance of millennial QSs as workforce in the built environment is highlighted by this statistic. Generational knowledge has become a necessity for employers wanting to better manage their millennial employees The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate what could motivate millennial QSs and to establish their job satisfaction levels. Subsequently, this research aimed to identify the expectations of millennial QSs. Focus groups as qualitative research methodology were applied. It was found that the majority of millennial QSs were satisfied with their current employment. The top factors relating to motivation and employee turnover were identified as rewards/bonuses, appreciation, recognition, and growth. Research data were further analyzed to identify the main expectations of millennial QSs. Research participants were limited to millennial QSs in SA born before 1991. The findings of this article will assist employers to integrate generational knowledge with industry demands in order to correctly motivate millennial QSs.
